New Graduate & Onboard Retention

How long will the new graduate nurses you hire this year stay with you? Did you know that the average cost to replace an RN is estimated to be between $40,000 and $60,000? And that the total cost to the organization when a new graduate nurse leaves is even higher when you factor in the cost of a new graduate internship, preceptors, etc?

The Gannett Healthcare Group (GHG) Consulting has developed a program to follow your new graduate nurses through their first year of practice, getting their feedback throughout the year on how well they are doing in the transition from student to professional nurse, finding out what’s working and what’s not, and identifying trends so that you can continue to improve your new graduate program. By implementing this program, you will gain a better understanding about which new graduate systems, strategies, and workplace environments are working well and which need improvement throughout the year so that interventions can occur in a timely manner.

The Program Includes:

  • Initial meeting with key individuals in your nursing organization (CNO, directors, managers, preceptors, staff development, etc.)
  • A meeting with the new graduate group or, if the majority are not hired at the same time, orientation sessions will be accomplished individually via the phone and email.
  • Using email and the internet, we will survey your new graduates at hire and after they begin work at approximately weeks 4, 10, 16, 24, 36, and 52.
  • The managers and preceptors will be surveyed at the time of new graduate hire and at approximately weeks 4, 16, 36, and 52.
  • Reports after each survey and meeting will be sent to the main contact person, the CNO, and to other individuals as requested by the CNO.
  • We will conduct follow-up meetings with the managers, preceptors, and new graduates (separate meetings) at approximately weeks 24 and 53. More frequent meetings can occur if the organization desires.
